Dr Chew Weng Cheng is a Research Fellow at the University of Leeds' School of Medicine, affiliated with the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM). He holds a first-class Bachelor of Biomedical Science (2015) and a PhD in Infection and Immunity from the University of Liverpool and Chulalongkorn University (Thailand). His work bridges cardiovascular and infectious disease research through multi-omics methodologies.
- Education: BSc Hons, PhD
- Professional Memberships: The Physiological Society, Biophysical Society
His research explores the intersection of cardiometabolic diseases and infections, focusing on genes regulating endothelial cell membrane mechanics. He pioneered work on the TRPC1 gene's role in COVID-19 severity and heart failure, proposing a novel hypothesis linking ion channels to co-susceptibility phenomena. Current efforts combine big data genetic analysis with wet-lab validation using patient tissue samples.
Research Institutes: Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM), Discovery and Translational Science, Multidisciplinary Cardiovascular Research Centre.
- Scientific Awards:
- Mautner BHF Career Development fellowship (2021)
As a tutor for the Introduction to Medical Sciences (IMS) module, he supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students. The School of Medicine welcomes global PhD applicants interested in cardiovascular research.
