Cherry Murray

Cherry Murray is a Professor of Physics and Deputy Director for Research at Biosphere 2, University of Arizona. She holds the rank of Primary Faculty. Her career spans academia, industry, and policy, with key roles at Bell Labs (1978–2004), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Harvard University as Dean. She earned a PhD in Physics from MIT (1978).

Research & Interests: Transitioned from experimental condensed matter physics and nanotechnology to leadership roles in semiconductor R&D, national security research, and science policy. Current focus includes transdisciplinary science education, sustainable development solutions for food, water, and energy, and promoting diversity in STEM. Collaborates across disciplines to advance scalable, community-focused innovations.

Advocates for citizen engagement in science and policy, and entrepreneurship in developing nations. Currently promotes interdisciplinary research and spin-off companies in sustainable development.

Labs & Initiatives: Active at Biosphere 2, focusing on ecosystem research and sustainability. Collaborates with global networks on scalable solutions for UN Sustainable Development Goals.
