Cher Carney is a Senior Research Associate at the Driving Safety Research Institute (DSRI) at the University of Iowa, specializing in transportation human factors and safety research. With an MS in Industrial Engineering (Human Factors) from the University of Iowa and a BA in Psychology from the University of Northern Iowa, her work focuses on driver behavior analysis and vehicle safety systems.
Research Focus
Ms. Carney's expertise spans:
- Naturalistic driving studies and crash data analysis
- Human performance evaluation of ADAS and automated vehicles
- Development of safety standards and design guidelines
- Distraction/drowsiness countermeasures and teen driving interventions
Professional Background
Before joining UIowa, she spent ten years at Battelle Human Factors Transportation Center where she:
- Developed human factors guidelines for in-vehicle displays
- Researched Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS)
- Investigated Side Object Detection Systems (SODS)
- Contributed to Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) projects
Current Work
At DSRI, she leads research on Level 2 automation vigilance and driver takeovers, utilizing driving simulators including NADS-1, NADS-2, and miniSim platforms.
