Chelsea Shields-Más

Chelsea Shields-Más is an Assistant Professor of History & Philosophy at SUNY Old Westbury. She specializes in early medieval English history (9th-11th centuries), focusing on administration, law, and pre-Conquest culture. Her research emphasizes Northumbria's political dynamics and the role of royal officials like reeves and sheriffs. Shields-Más holds a PhD from The University of York (2014), an M.A. in Medieval Studies (2010), and a B.A. in Medieval Studies from Mount Holyoke College (2008).

Her research interests span Anglo-Saxon legal systems, Northumbrian regional history, medieval hagiography, and the cultural legacy of Roman Britain. She is completing a monograph, The Reeve in Early Medieval England, under contract with Boydell and Brewer. Shields-Más actively presents at conferences such as the Leeds International Medieval Congress and the International Congress on Medieval Studies, addressing topics like royal officials' roles and the Norman Conquest's socio-political impacts.

Recent publications include studies on Edward the Confessor's sheriffs and Archbishop Wulfstan’s writings on holy society, reflecting her focus on governance and ecclesiastical influence. She teaches courses ranging from European medieval history to women and witchcraft in early modern contexts.
