Charlie T. Cox is Associate Professor of the Practice of Chemistry at Duke University. His research investigates student understanding of organic chemistry concepts like resonance, kinetics, and stereochemistry through problem-solving analysis and assessment design.
Recent studies examine how conjugation complexity affects problem-solving approaches across course levels and how reaction coordinate diagrams support mechanistic reasoning. He develops interventions like writing assignments to reinforce acid-base concepts and polymer synthesis experiments for virtual labs.
As Director of Undergraduate Studies (2021-2024), Cox redesigned curricula to incorporate active learning. He teaches core chemistry courses and mentors graduate teaching assistants, with pedagogical work featured in Advanced Placement initiatives.
