Dr. Charlie Sun is a Senior Research Engineer at the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) affiliated with the University of Kentucky's Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering. He has held this full-time position since 1998 and maintains a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Kentucky. His expertise spans structural engineering, geotechnical research, and transportation infrastructure analysis.

- Master’s and PhD in Structural Engineering - University of Kentucky
Research interests focus on structural health monitoring, pavement dynamics, geosynthetic-reinforced pavements, and smart data acquisition systems. He leads or co-leads projects on transportation structure instrumentation and field testing. Dr. Sun has authored over 40 technical papers and maintains professional memberships with ASTM International, the North American Geosynthetics Society, and ASCE. Prior to academia, he designed buildings (e.g., hotels, hospitals) and infrastructure at a structural engineering firm.
His work integrates field testing, numerical modeling, and web-based data systems. He collaborates on projects involving remote monitoring and database applications for transportation infrastructure.
