Charles McKinney is Professor of History at Rhodes College, specializing in African American history and civil rights movements. He earned his Ph.D. from Duke University and teaches courses on the African American experience. His research examines local civil rights struggles, particularly in Wilson, North Carolina and Memphis, Tennessee.
McKinney's publications explore mass-based protest in rural communities removed from urban centers. His current project investigates George Washington Lee's political career and civil rights activism in Memphis.
He has appeared in media discussing critical race theory and racial justice issues. McKinney mentors students in historical research methods and encourages critical engagement with primary sources.
