Cait McKinney is an Associate Professor at the School of Communication, Simon Fraser University (SFU). Their research explores queer communities' use of computing technologies, media history, and activist media, with a focus on how LGBTQ+ movements engage with information systems. McKinney is also a practicing artist, collaborating with Hazel Meyer on queer archival interventions.

McKinney’s scholarly work includes the award-winning book Information Activism: A Queer History of Lesbian Media Technologies (Duke University Press, 2020) and the forthcoming The Sex Lives of Data (2025). Recent artistic activations include exhibitions at Glasgow International Art Biennial (2018) and The Mitchell Art Gallery (2024). They were honored with SFU’s 2021 Gertrude J. Robinson Award for exceptional scholarship.
