Jen Marchbank is a Professor and Graduate Chair in the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies department at Simon Fraser University (SFU Surrey). She holds a PhD in Politics from the University of Strathclyde (1993), an MA in 20th Century Historical Studies (Polytechnic of Central London, 1991), and a BA in Economic & Social History with Politics (University of Strathclyde, 1987). A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2006, she specializes in LGBTQ2SIA+ activism, elder abuse, feminist pedagogy, and intergenerational work.
Her research integrates community engagement, particularly with LGBTQ2SIA+ youth through co-founding Youth 4 A Change and involvement in organizations like NEVR and Surrey Pride Society. She has received multiple awards, including SFU’s Excellence in Teaching Award (2019) and the 2023 Social Trailblazer recognition. Her work bridges academia with grassroots activism, focusing on marginalized communities’ resilience and systemic challenges.
Publications include Elder Abuse in the LGBTQ2SA+ Community (2023) and Introduction to Gender (2014). Research themes emphasize queer youth advocacy, LGBTQ+ elder care, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Grants and community partnerships underpin her efforts to address violence prevention and social equity.
As a long-term volunteer with LGBTQ2SIA+ youth and seniors, she leads intergenerational projects addressing issues like elder abuse and refugee settlement. Her pedagogical approach centers inclusive teaching strategies rooted in feminist theory.
