Charles (Charlie) Bankart serves as the Senior Internationalization Officer (SIO) at the University of Kansas, part of the provost’s leadership team since 2017. He holds a courtesy appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies within the School of Education and Human Sciences. His role oversees KU International Affairs, encompassing the Applied English Center, International Short Programs, International Support Services, Study Abroad and Global Engagement, and five area studies centers integrated in 2024.
Education: PhD in Higher Education Administration (KU), MPA in Comparative International Affairs & Urban Management (Indiana University), MA in Central Eurasian Studies (Indiana University), BA in Neuroscience/Biopsychology and Psychology (Oberlin College).
Research interests focus on international higher education, global education policy, and institutional internationalization strategies. His career includes roles as Assistant Vice Provost for International Programs, interim director of International Student Services, and service on boards like NAFSA and the International Relations Council of Kansas City. He has extensive experience in grant development, immigration compliance, and managing international agreements.
Prior to KU, he worked at Indiana University overseeing international programs and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Hungary teaching English (1994–1996).
