Dr. Chris Johnson is a Research Fellow affiliated with the Department of Slavic, German, and Eurasian Studies at the University of Kansas. He holds a PhD in Germanic Languages and Literatures (1994) from KU and has dedicated over three decades to studying German dialects in Kansas and Missouri. His work focuses on Volga German dialects, historical linguistics, and language preservation. Previously serving as a Courtesy Assistant Professor and holding administrative roles at KU, he transitioned to a Research Affiliate role post-retirement to continue his research.

Research interests span German dialectology, with a focus on Kansas and Missouri communities. He pioneered the Linguistic Atlas of Kansas German Dialects, leveraging digital tools to preserve audio recordings. His current efforts involve archiving materials on KU ScholarWorks for long-term access.
He is affiliated with the Max Kade Center for German-American Studies and other university initiatives, contributing to interdisciplinary work in language and cultural studies.
