Lado Chanturia is a Full Professor of Private and Comparative Law at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and a Judge of the European Court of Human Rights (2018–present). He has held prominent roles including President of Georgia’s Supreme Court (1999–2004), Minister of Justice (1998–1999), and Ambassador to Germany (2014–2018). His academic career includes visiting professorships at Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel and research fellowships with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
Education highlights: PhD in Comparative Law (1989), DAAD fellowships in Germany (1991–1993), and a Doctorate in German real estate law (1994). His research focuses on comparative legal systems, human rights law, and judicial reform. Over 230 publications include books on civil codes, commentaries on legal frameworks, and articles in leading journals like Zeitschrift für Europäisches Privatrecht.
Awards include honorary doctorates from Kiel University (2013) and Georgia’s David-Agmashenebeli-University (2012), as well as Germany’s Grosses Bundesverdienstkreuz (2006). His work emphasizes legal transformation in post-Soviet states and the role of international legal standards in judicial systems.
