Changyi Johnny Chen, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor and Director of Basic Science and Translational Labs at Baylor College of Medicine, holding the Molecular Surgery Endowed Chair. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Patient Preference and Adherence.
Education: Earned MD from Southeast University School of Medicine (China), PhD from Georgia Institute of Technology (USA), and completed residency at Southeast University School of Medicine - Zhong-Da Hospital (China).
Research focuses on cardiovascular disease mechanisms (e.g., HIV protease inhibitors' effects, resistin, uric acid), pancreatic cancer (microRNA 196a, XIST, Jude-2 genes), and nanotechnology drug delivery (LGA-PEI systems). He develops ACE2 inhibitors for SARS-CoV-2 and investigates hyperuricemia treatments. Key projects include endothelial cell differentiation using stem cells and vascular tissue engineering.
Notable awards include the 2018 Hans-Peter Krayenbuehl Memorial Award (International Academy of Cardiology) and Inaugural Senior Member status in the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).
Laboratory work spans molecular imaging, targeted therapies, and translational applications like Speratum CR’s cancer treatments. Research emphasizes bridging basic science with clinical solutions for cardiovascular and oncological challenges.
