Catrina McStay is a Senior Research Fellow in the Food Environments Team at the Nutrition and Health Innovation Institute, School of Health and Medical Sciences at Edith Cowan University. She oversees research translation for the Food Environments Team and provides support for the portfolio of energy drink research in the Consumer Food Environments research theme.
Her educational background includes a Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics (2013) and a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition (2011), both from Curtin University of Technology.
Catrina's research focuses on the impact of food environments, food policy and law, and food insecurity on health and wellbeing outcomes, with particular emphasis on children's nutritional intake and food safety. As an Accredited Practising Dietitian with over 10 years of professional experience in public health nutrition policy, her work bridges academic research with practical policy implementation.
Her recent research examines energy drink consumption patterns among adolescents and food safety in donation systems, reflecting her dual expertise in nutrition science and policy development. She has contributed to significant public health initiatives including the Health Star Rating System and Pregnancy Warning Labelling on Alcohol.
Catrina previously worked in cereal chemistry managing laboratory and food production facilities in Australia and in food safety advisory roles. At the WA Department of Health, she served as a senior policy advisor where she researched and formulated departmental policy positions on public health nutrition matters under the Australia and New Zealand food regulation system.
