Dr Catrin S. Rhys is a Senior Lecturer in linguistics and Head of School at the School of Communication and Media, Ulster University. Her research focuses on conversation analysis, examining language and social interaction in institutional and everyday contexts, particularly within healthcare settings like NHS complaints handling.

Her research bridges formal linguistics and interactional analysis, emphasizing the interplay between linguistic structures and social practices. Key projects include the NIHR-funded Real Complaints study and the National Lottery-funded Language Made Fun initiative, which engages schools, communities, and speech therapists.
Her recent publications analyze the dynamics of institutional complaints, teenage resistance strategies, and ethical considerations in data use. She serves as Associate Editor of Pragmatics and collaborates with the Ulster Centre on Multilingualism (UCoM).
