Dr. Catrin Rhys is Senior Lecturer and Head of the School of Communication and Media at Ulster University. She joined Ulster in 1995 after completing an ESRC-funded PhD in Chinese Syntax at the University of Edinburgh. Her research employs conversation analysis to study institutional interactions, particularly in healthcare complaint systems and multilingualism contexts.
Research Focus: She leads interdisciplinary projects including NIHR-funded studies on NHS complaint language dynamics. Her work bridges linguistics with healthcare communication, examining epistemic positioning, resistance strategies, and institutional talk. Key initiatives include the Ulster Centre on Multilingualism and Language Made Fun project.
Publications: Recent work (2023-2025) demonstrates strong emphasis on healthcare communication ethics, patient experience, and qualitative methodology. Her articles consistently apply conversation analysis to real-world institutional challenges.
Advising: Currently supervises PhD researchers in discourse analysis, linguistics, and social policy.
