Associate Professor Catia Malvaso holds dual appointments in the School of Psychology and School of Public Health at the University of Adelaide, within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She is a Future Making Fellow at the Robinson Research Institute and Criminal Justice Lead in BetterStart Health and Development Research. Her work focuses on pathways between child protection, youth justice, and adult criminal justice systems.
Malvaso completed her PhD in 2017, earning the Dean’s Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence and the Frank Dalziel Prize. She has received prestigious awards such as the Australian Research Council DECRA (2019–2024) and the Tall Poppy Award (2021). Her research integrates developmental psychology, criminology, and epidemiology to identify prevention strategies for vulnerable populations.
Key areas of focus include: child maltreatment’s impact on offending behavior, trauma-informed youth justice practices, and systemic reforms for young people with complex needs. Her recent work emphasizes early intervention to disrupt cycles of disadvantage. Malvaso collaborates with government agencies and has secured over $3M in grants for projects addressing child welfare and justice system interactions.
Her research outputs span 50+ peer-reviewed articles and policy reports, with a focus on translating evidence into practice. Upcoming initiatives include a University of Adelaide Future Making Fellowship (2025) to further her interdisciplinary work.
