Cathy Lane is a Professor of Sound Arts at the University of the Arts London, based at the London College of Communication. She established the Department of Sound Arts and Design and co-directed the Creative Research into Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP). Her research focuses on sound's relationship to history, memory, and environment, using spoken word, field recordings, and archival materials. She holds a PhD in electroacoustic music composition from City University, London.
Key roles include leading CRiSAP, curating the Her Noise Archive to explore gender in sound practices, and advising over 20 PhD/Master’s students on topics ranging from field recording methodologies to sonic activism. Notable publications include Sound Arts Now (2021) and In the Field (2013), alongside articles in journals like Seismograf and Women and Music.
Her creative work includes installations like The Hebrides Suite (2013) and performances addressing ecological crisis and feminist sound practices. Grants include the AHRC-funded Creativeworks London (2012–2016) and collaborations with institutions like the BBC and British Museum. She advocates for 'disordered listening' to challenge orthodoxies and promote inclusive sonic practices.
