Professor Cathy Creswell is a Professor of Developmental Clinical Psychology at the University of Oxford, holding dual appointments in the Departments of Experimental Psychology and Psychiatry. She is also a Nicholas Kurti Senior Research Fellow at Brasenose College and an NIHR Senior Investigator. Her academic journey includes a BA (Hons) from Oxford, a DClinPsy from University College London (UCL), and a PhD from UCL. Professor Creswell’s research focuses on the development and treatment of mental health problems in children and adolescents, with a particular emphasis on anxiety disorders. She leads the TOPIC Research Group, which develops and evaluates psychological interventions for young people.
Her professional roles include Associate Head for Research in the Department of Experimental Psychology, Theme Lead for the Oxford Health NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Mental Health in Development, and Theme Lead for the Oxford and Thames Valley NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC). She is an Honorary Consultant Clinical Psychologist with the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust.
Professor Creswell’s research has addressed the impacts of global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic on child mental health, the efficacy of digital interventions, and the prevention of anxiety disorders. Her work emphasizes family involvement and the translation of research into clinical practice. Key achievements include the development of the Online Support and Intervention (OSI) program for child anxiety and the Co-SPACE study tracking mental health during lockdowns.
She has received prestigious accolades, including Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Her contributions extend to policy through initiatives like the Minimising Young Children’s Anxiety through Schools (MY-CATS) program and school-based screening protocols for anxiety disorders.
