David Creswell is the William S. Dietrich II Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), affiliated with the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Psychology. He also serves as CEO of Equa Health, a health technology company. His research focuses on stress resilience, mindfulness interventions, and health neuroscience, with a particular emphasis on how mindfulness practices and cognitive strategies (e.g., self-affirmation, reappraisal) buffer stress and improve physical and mental health outcomes.
Education: B.A. in Psychology from Colorado College and Ph.D. in Psychology from UCLA. Creswell leads the Health and Human Performance Lab at CMU, where his team conducts interdisciplinary studies combining neuroimaging, behavioral experiments, and community-based interventions. His work spans clinical psychology, psychoneuroimmunology, and social psychology, with recent explorations into unconscious learning processes and behavioral priming.
Research highlights include studies on mindfulness meditation’s effects on brain function, stress physiology, and disease outcomes, as well as investigations into the role of belongingness and social support in mental health. Notable contributions include demonstrating that mindfulness reduces loneliness and enhances social contact, and identifying neural mechanisms linking acceptance-based practices to stress reduction.
Publications span high-impact journals like Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Psychosomatic Medicine, reflecting his focus on translational research bridging basic neuroscience and public health applications. Creswell’s work is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and other funding bodies, and his findings inform both academic discourse and practical interventions in healthcare and education sectors.
