Catherine Walsh is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Law, McGill University, since 2001. Previously, she held positions at the University of New Brunswick (1994–2001), including roles as Associate Dean (2003–2005). Her expertise spans secured transactions law, private international law, and international business law. She actively contributes to law reform, notably through involvement with UNCITRAL’s Working Group VI, shaping multilateral secured transactions frameworks. Walsh is co-author of Personal Property Security Law and a key contributor to Private International Law in Common Law Canada.
Education includes a B.C.L. from Oxford (1979), LL.B. from UNB (1978), and B.A. from Dalhousie (1972). Her research emphasizes comparative legal systems, with a focus on transnational legal harmonization and third-party effects in secured transactions. Recent work addresses cross-border jurisdictional challenges and the evolution of international commercial law standards.
Publications span topics like UNCITRAL Model Laws, party autonomy in assignments, and corporate jurisdiction under the CJPTA. She has advised on legal frameworks for receivables financing and participated in global legal reform initiatives.
