Dr. Catherine Toben is a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Psychiatry at the University of Adelaide. Her research investigates the bidirectional links between brain function and immune responses to stress in mental health disorders, with focus on transcriptomic and proteomic signatures in depression, PTSD, and schizophrenia.
Her work examines how interventions like nutrition and mindfulness practices modulate neuro-immune mechanisms to reduce psychiatric symptoms. Current projects investigate miRNAs in cognitive impairment during depression and shared immune signatures across psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.
Dr. Toben's publications explore neuroinflammatory pathways, stress-induced pathophysiology, and immunological biomarkers. She contributes to large-scale studies of inflammation-brain structure relationships in depression and standardization of biomarker protocols for personalized psychiatry.
She coordinates undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry programs, teaching fundamentals of biological psychiatry and neuroimmune interactions.
