Dr. Catherine Schmidt is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Social Work at Lakehead University. She joined the university in August 2024 after completing her PhD in Social Work at the University of Toronto, an MSW from York University, and a BSc in Zoology and Philosophy from the University of Toronto.

Dr. Schmidt’s research focuses on the intersections of immigration and social policies, particularly how these policies affect access to healthcare and social programs for immigrants with precarious status in Canada. Her work emphasizes qualitative methods, reproductive justice, and social reproduction. She also explores themes of motherhood, family support programs, and transnational family separation.
Her recent publications analyze everyday bordering practices, bureaucratic violence, and social worker attitudes toward immigrants. Her teaching integrates micro and macro social work practice, informed by over a decade of field experience in migrant outreach, community development in Nicaragua, and clinical therapy in Toronto.
