Dr. Heather Schmidt serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Cape Breton University (CBU), holding the CTL Teaching Chair in Allyship & Decolonization since joining the faculty in 2009. Her academic journey began with a BA-Hons from the University of Victoria, followed by MA and PhD degrees from York University.
Dr. Schmidt's research employs participatory action research and collaborative decolonializing methodologies to advance empowerment and social justice for historically marginalized communities, including L’nu (Indigenous peoples), 2SLGBTQ+ post-secondary students, and individuals with mental health challenges. She actively partners with local organizations such as Horizon Achievement Centre, Crossroads Clubhouse, and CBU Student Services to ground her work in community needs.
Her teaching portfolio includes specialized courses in Indigenous People’s Psychology, Qualitative Methods in Psychology, and Community Psychology, where she integrates decolonial frameworks and community-based approaches. Dr. Schmidt's commitment to inclusive education aligns with CBU's location in Mi’kma’ki—the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaw People—as reflected in her scholarly practice and institutional roles.
