Professor Catherine Reading is a Professor and Director of Professional Development in the School of Education at Durham University. She leads professional learning initiatives, collaborating nationally and internationally to design bespoke teacher education programs, including online and face-to-face courses. Her roles include outreach with local schools and leadership in teacher education programs. She holds a BSc(Hons) in Medicinal Chemistry from University College London (1991), a PGCE in Science from Durham University (1993), and a Master’s in Online and Distance Education.
Her research focuses on Communities of Practice, International Education, Peer Review, Professional Learning, and Science Education. Key contributions include developing pedagogical strategies for teacher training and enhancing technology-enhanced learning. She has delivered workshops on peer review and evaluative judgements, presented at conferences on educational transitions and assessment, and contributed to professional networks like UCET and ASE Futures.
Professor Reading has received notable awards including the Senior Fellowship of the HEA (2017), Leading Transformation in Learning and Teaching Award (2017), and multiple Excellence in Teaching awards (2016). She has pioneered innovative teacher education pathways such as the International PGCE and Postgraduate Certificate in Education Theory. Her work emphasizes bridging theory and practice through immersive school experiences and technology integration.
Her professional development programs address educator readiness, particularly amid global challenges like the pandemic. She oversees Durham’s Teacher Education portfolio, including undergraduate/postgraduate routes and international collaborations.
