Catherine Haworth is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for Music and Music Technology at the University of Huddersfield, working within the Department of Media, Humanities and the Arts in the School of Arts and Humanities. She is an active member of both the Centre for History, Culture and Memory and the Centre for Research in Music and its Technologies. With a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research, Haworth's work bridges the fields of musicology, film studies, and cultural studies, focusing particularly on how music constructs identity across various media.
Dr. Haworth earned her academic credentials from the University of Leeds, completing a first-class BA (Hons) in Music, followed by an MA in Film Music Studies, and ultimately a PhD in film musicology in 2011. Her doctoral research, titled 'Dames, darlings, and detectives: women, agency, and the soundtrack in RKO Radio Pictures crime films,' established her expertise in the sonic constructions of femininity within classical Hollywood cinema.
Haworth's research centers on two primary strands: music and sound in audiovisual media, and issues of representation and identity in musical culture. She has published extensively on topics including scoring female detectives in 1940s Hollywood, music and gender in medical discourse within gothic films, women's representation in James Bond soundtracks, and stardom in film musicals. Her interdisciplinary approach connects classical Hollywood cinema with contemporary media, examining how musical practices construct gender, sexuality, and cultural identity across historical periods.
Her recent publications reveal a growing emphasis on queer theory in television soundtracks, particularly in Ryan Murphy's horror productions, while maintaining her foundational interest in classical Hollywood crime films. Haworth has also expanded her research into musical constructions of girlhood and national identity, demonstrating the breadth of her scholarly interests beyond traditional film music studies.

Her research contributes to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to gender equality and quality education.
Haworth maintains an active performing career as a vocalist with several ensembles including the Clothworkers Consort of Leeds, Borealis, Leodis Consort, and Leeds Baroque Choir, demonstrating her commitment to both scholarly and practical musical engagement.
