Catherine Greene is an Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Microbiology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and Deputy Head of the School of Postgraduate Studies overseeing PhD programs. She holds editorial roles including Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Innate Immunity and Associate Editor of the European Respiratory Review. Her research focuses on innate immunity in cystic fibrosis (CF) and α-1 antitrypsin deficiency, with emphasis on non-coding RNA mechanisms and translational therapies. She has supervised 23 doctoral students and examined 25 PhD theses.
Education: PhD and BA(Hons) in Microbiology from Trinity College Dublin (1995 and 1991), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education from RCSI (2018). Professional roles include serving on scientific review boards for the European Commission, US Alpha-1 Foundation, and Irish funding bodies. Recognitions include Fellowship of the European Respiratory Society and leadership in ERS Assembly 3 (2019–2022).
Research interests span CF pathogenesis, sex dimorphism in lung disease, and nanomedicine applications. Her work addresses microRNA regulation, gene delivery systems, and precision medicine strategies for genetic respiratory disorders. Grants funded by Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Horizon2020, and NIH support projects on lung disease mechanisms and therapeutic development.
