Professor Catherine Clarke is a cultural historian specializing in medieval history, heritage, and public history. She holds the Chair in the History of People, Place and Community at the Institute of Historical Research (IHR), part of the University of London, and directs the IHR’s Centre for the History of People, Place and Community and the Victoria County History of England. Previously at the University of Southampton, she remains a Visiting Professor there.
Her research focuses on place-making, heritage interpretation, and collaborative methodologies. Key projects include the St Thomas Way heritage route (Wales/Hereford), the Invisible Worlds AR project (Alderley Edge), and the AHRC-funded Towns and Cultural Economies initiative. She explores digital approaches to history through projects like Medieval Cityscapes Today and co-leads the IHR’s MA in History, Place & Community.
Her academic work integrates creative and practice-led methods, emphasizing public engagement. She has led major grants, including AHRC projects on medieval Swansea and Chester, and contributes to media through BBC collaborations, The Conversation, and exhibitions. Her upcoming book, A History of England in 25 Poems (2025), bridges poetry and historical narrative.
Her advisory roles include the Victoria County History and CARMEN (Worldwide Medieval Network). She teaches modules on applied public history and supervises doctoral students, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue between academia and communities.
