Catherine Atkin serves as a Non-residential Fellow at CodeX (Stanford Center for Legal Informatics) within Stanford Law School, where she leads the Climate Data Policy Initiative (CDPI). The CDPI project convenes climate experts, policymakers, and technologists to develop climate data policies that catalyze innovation, unlock climate finance, and accelerate global decarbonization through next-generation technologies including blockchain, IoT, and AI.
Her educational background includes:
- BA from Stanford University
- Law degree from UC Berkeley School of Law
- Master’s degree in Urban Planning from UCLA
Atkin is a recognized leader in climate change and urban sustainability with deep expertise in national and sub-national GHG accounting policies. Her research integrates legal frameworks with technological innovation to address equitable decarbonization, emphasizing how blockchain and AI can transform climate action and sustainable development. She actively bridges policy implementation with systems design for global climate solutions.
As co-chair of the UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub's Innovations in Carbon Accounting and Climate Action Working Group, she shapes international climate policy. She also co-edits the Springer Press publication Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Climate Change Adaptation – Flood Risk Assessment and Green Recovery and serves as Director/Co-Founder of BlueVista, focusing on practical climate interventions through cross-sector collaboration.
