Cassandra J. Cleghorn is a Senior Lecturer in American Studies and English at Williams College, where she has taught since 1990. She holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University (1995) and a B.A. in Classics from UC Santa Cruz (1983). Her interdisciplinary focus bridges 19th-century American literature with contemporary creative practices, including poetry and inter-arts collaboration.
Her expertise spans personal essay writing, creative nonfiction, and American poetry, with a particular interest in the intersection of photography, architecture, and cultural critique. She chairs the American Studies program and curates literary citizenship through her role as Poetry Editor at Tupelo Press. Her work has appeared in Paris Review, Yale Review, and other leading journals.
A dedicated mentor, Cleghorn emphasizes supporting first-generation and students of color. Beyond academia, she engages in textile arts, Irish/French Canadian fiddle music, and 'dog therapy.' Her debut poetry collection Four Weathercocks (2016) and forthcoming work A Stay Against Want reflect her commitment to experimental and socially engaged writing.
