Karen Babine is a UC Foundation Associate Professor of English at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, a two-time Minnesota Book Award winner, and founder/editor of Assay: A Journal of Nonfiction Studies. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Eastern Washington University.

Her recent scholarship focuses on the intersection of personal narrative with environmental, medical, and pedagogical themes. She explores structural innovation in nonfiction, the role of place in storytelling, and the ethical dimensions of relatable narratives.
Her forthcoming edited collection Beyond Truth and Fact: Innovations in the Craft of Creative Nonfiction (2027) and her third book The Allure of Elsewhere (2025) highlight her commitment to advancing nonfiction pedagogy and place-based storytelling.

Karen’s service includes chairing the general education committee, advising the student literary journal Sequoya Review, and serving on the Environmental Studies Advisory Committee. She actively engages with the Meacham Writers Workshop and Southern Literary Festival.
