Dr. Casey Mecija is an Assistant Professor in Communication & Media Studies at York University's Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies. Her research theorizes sound production in Filipinx diaspora contexts to analyze how media creation facilitates queer forms of belonging that challenge racialized colonial frameworks.
Mecija's interdisciplinary work explores:
- Queer sonic practices in diasporic communities
- Media production as resistance to colonial narratives
- Filipinx identity formation through sound
- Intersections of gender, sexuality and diaspora
- Decolonial approaches to sound ethnography
As an accomplished musician and filmmaker, Mecija brings practice-based research methodologies to her academic work. Her creative productions have received international recognition and inform her theoretical frameworks examining how diasporic subjects use media to create alternative kinship structures beyond racialized and gendered constraints.
