Professor Caryn West is a Professor in Nursing, Paramedicine, and Healthcare Sciences at James Cook University (JCU), where she also directs the Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Research. She holds a prominent role as Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Nursing, Midwifery Education, and Research Capacity Building. Her academic career spans roles as Dean of Research and Academic Head of Nursing & Midwifery, alongside multiple Centre Directorships.
Her research focuses on disaster management, nursing education, alcohol-related injuries in Indigenous communities, mental health, self-harm, and suicide, with resilience as a unifying theme. She has led projects funded by prestigious bodies like the NHMRC and collaborated internationally with the WHO and Pacific/Western Pacific nations.
Recent publications emphasize mammography best practices, Indigenous nursing workforce profiles, and clinical governance in the Pacific. Key awards include the NHMRC Early Career Fellowship and the Faculty of Medicine’s Inclusive Practice Award for disability support.
