Cary Esser is a Senior Professor and Chair of the Department of Ceramics at the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) since 1996. She holds an MFA from Alfred University and a BFA from KCAI. Her work explores materiality in ceramics, architectural terra cotta, and large-scale installations. Esser has taught at Duke University, Louisiana State University, and the University of North Carolina. She has been a resident artist at prestigious institutions like the Archie Bray Foundation and the International Ceramics Studio in Hungary.
Her research interests include the intersection of ceramics with architecture and contemporary art practices. Notable exhibitions include solo shows at the Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art and group exhibitions at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Esser’s work has been featured in publications such as Ceramics: Art and Perception, Studio Potter, and Ceramics Monthly.
Her awards include the 2013 KCAI Distinguished Achievement Award and the 2009 McKnight Foundation Residency. Esser’s PBS documentary appearance in Season Two of Craft In America highlights her contributions to ceramic education and artistry. She has curated exhibitions like Flora and Fauna in Ceramic Sculpture and holds the Kathleen Collins Endowed Chair in Ceramics.
