معرفی
Carolyn Pluim is a Professor in the Department of Leadership, Educational Psychology and Foundations (LEPF) at Northern Illinois University's College of Education, where she also serves as Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Her work bridges sociology of education, curriculum studies, and educational policy, with a critical lens on school health practices.
Her research centers on the sociocultural and political dimensions of school health policies, particularly how discourses around obesity, fitness, and wellness shape student and teacher identities. She critically examines programs like Fitnessgram®, school nutrition, and health pedagogy, revealing how neoliberal ideologies and surveillance mechanisms operate within educational institutions.
Pluim's recent publications reflect a consistent focus on the ethical, political, and commercial entanglements of health education. Themes include the governance of children's bodies through data, the role of celebrities in food pedagogy, and the stigmatization of both students and teachers based on body size. Her work calls for more critical and ethical approaches to health in schools.
- Co-authored book: Schools and Public Health: Past, Present, Future (2014)
- Extensive peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Critical Public Health, Sport, Education and Society, and Journal of Education Policy
