Carolyn Shread is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Romance Languages and Cultures at Mount Holyoke College. She specializes in translation studies, French and Francophone literature, and feminist theory, with a focus on decolonizing curricula and integrating digital practices in language pedagogy.

Her research explores the intersection of translation and political acts, emphasizing marginalized voices. She has contributed to eco-translation studies, feminist psychoanalytic paradigms, and the translation of contemporary French philosophy. Shread co-chairs the Five College Faculty Seminars on Literary Translation and Translate Together!, and participates in the Eco-Translation Network.
Carolyn Shread’s recent publications include translations of Catherine Malabou’s works, with her 2024 article on the plasticity of thought in translation and a 2023 chapter on ecological approaches in The Routledge Handbook of Concepts and Theories of Translation. Her translation of Malabou’s Pleasure Erased: The Clitoris Unthought received the 2022 French Voices Award.
