Carolyn La Rocco is a Research Fellow at St John’s College, University of Oxford. Her academic background includes a BA in History from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, followed by an MLitt in Ancient History (St Andrews), an MSt in Classical Archaeology (Oxford), and a PhD in Ancient History (St Andrews). She held a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the RomanIslam Center (Universität Hamburg).
Her research focuses on late antique Iberia, with projects exploring Visigothic material culture, Christianisation, and female patronage. She also examines the reception of antiquity in modern media, experimental archaeology (ancient recipes), and the socio-religious dynamics of late Roman and post-Roman societies. Her work bridges archaeology, epigraphy, and textual analysis to address questions of religious change, gender roles, and imperial transition.
Recent publications include analyses of Visigothic church foundations (2024) and Visigothic power discourses (2021 book review). Her PhD, funded by the Wolfson Foundation, investigated the decline of paganism in late Roman Iberia. She teaches modules on late antiquity, experimental archaeology, and reception studies.
