Carolyn Culbertson is a Professor and Program Coordinator for the Philosophy BA program at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) in the Department of Communication & Philosophy (College of Arts & Sciences). She holds a PhD, MA, and BA in Philosophy from the University of Oregon and Oglethorpe University. Her research focuses on Continental Philosophy (particularly phenomenology and hermeneutics), feminist philosophy, philosophy of language, and social epistemology. She currently serves as President of the North American Society for Philosophical Hermeneutics and Co-Editor of Springer Press's Contributions to Hermeneutics series.
Dr. Culbertson's work bridges historical philosophical analysis and contemporary debates, emphasizing dialogue, critical self-reflection, and the social dimensions of understanding. Her recent publications include *Gadamer and the Social Turn in Epistemology* (2024) and *Words Underway: Continental Philosophy of Language* (2019). She teaches courses on ancient philosophy, feminist thought, and philosophy of communication, integrating pedagogical approaches that foster student engagement with classical and modern texts.
Her academic contributions span edited volumes, book chapters, and peer-reviewed articles addressing topics like Gadamer's hermeneutics, testimonial justice, and the ethics of relationality. She actively promotes undergraduate research and interdisciplinary scholarship, emphasizing transferable skills development through scholarly engagement.
