Carolyn Abbott is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Landsman Career Development Chair in the Sciences at Brandeis University's Department of Mathematics. Her research focuses on geometric group theory and low-dimensional topology, particularly group actions on hyperbolic spaces and hierarchically hyperbolic groups. Abbott holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.A.T. from Cornell University, and a B.A. from Tufts University. She has been recognized with multiple teaching and research awards including the Perlmutter Faculty Fellow (2024-2025) and the Michael L. Walzer '56 Award for Teaching.
Her work explores hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups, Out(F_n), CAT(0) groups, and three-manifold groups. Recent publications include studies on hyperbolic actions, quasi-isometric embeddings, and hierarchical hyperbolic boundaries. Abbott's research bridges geometric, algebraic, and topological perspectives to advance understanding of complex group structures.
