Professor Caroline Gatrell is a leading academic at the University of Liverpool Management School, serving as Deputy Dean (Accreditation and Faculty) since 2016. Previously, she held roles as Associate Dean (Research) and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Management Reviews. Her research focuses on socio-cultural perspectives of work-family interfaces, gender, and bodily experiences among parents in employment. She pioneered concepts like 'pregnant presenteeism' and 'maternal body work,' examining tensions between motherhood and professional roles.
Key projects include a Leverhulme Fellowship (2018–2019) exploring fatherhood and health, co-led research on senior women clergy in the Church of England, and studies on midlife and older women’s workplace experiences. She currently serves as General Editor of the Journal of Management Studies and member of the Chartered ABS Academic Journal Guide committee. Awards include the British Academy of Management Research Medal (2020) and Fellowships from the British Academy of Management, Academy of Social Sciences, and Royal Society of Arts.
Her teaching and supervision emphasize qualitative research in work-family dynamics. Notable PhD completions include studies on fathers’ technology use, blended families, and workplace mistreatment. Professional leadership includes past chairs of NARTI and Chartered ABS Research Committee, reflecting her commitment to early career scholar development.
