Dr. Carola Koenig serves as Reader and Vice Dean (International) in the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences at Brunel University London, where she also leads the Flood and Coastal Engineering Programme. Her academic journey began with a Mechanical Engineering degree (Dipl-Ing) from the University of Stuttgart in 1992, followed by a PhD from Brunel University in 1998.
- 1992: Dipl.-Ing., Mechanical Engineering, University of Stuttgart, Germany
- 1998: PhD, Department of Manufacturing & Engineering Systems, Brunel University
- 2008: PGCert, Post Graduate Certificate for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, Brunel University
Dr. Koenig's research spans multiple interdisciplinary domains with primary focus on Fluid Mechanics, including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), within biomedical, bioprocess, and thermofluids engineering contexts. Her expertise encompasses cardiovascular flows and prostheses, biological flows in health and disease (particularly diabetes), climate change adaptation (focusing on flooding, sea level rise, and health impacts), and integrated energy systems for net-zero goals. She has developed significant research in microcirculation flows, blood flow modeling through ventricular assist devices, and two-phase flow modeling related to countercurrent chromatography.
Her recent publications reveal strong trends toward interdisciplinary work connecting fluid dynamics with medical applications, particularly in testosterone therapy research and cardiovascular health, as well as climate adaptation studies focusing on flood risk management. This reflects her evolving research trajectory from pure fluid mechanics into increasingly applied medical and environmental contexts.
Dr. Koenig has earned significant professional recognition:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng)
- Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE)
- Immediate past Chair of the Thermofluids Group at IMechE
- Member of IMechE's Climate Change Adaptation Working Group
- Fellow of the Institute of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
As Vice Dean (International), she oversees enhancing international partnerships, maintaining existing relationships, increasing staff and student mobility, and internationalizing college activities. Previously, she served as Course Director for Brunel's Flood and Coastal Engineering programmes, which are sponsored by the Environment Agency and co-delivered with HR Wallingford. Her teaching responsibilities span both undergraduate and master's levels in Fluid Mechanics, Biofluid Mechanics, Artificial Organs, Building Services and Heat Transfer Equipment, and Environmental Hydraulics and Design.
Dr. Koenig is actively involved with the Brunel Institute for Bioengineering (BIB) and the Institute of Environment, Health and Societies (IEHS), where she contributes to interdisciplinary research teams focusing on biomedical engineering applications and climate change adaptation strategies.
