Carol Ou is an award-winning cellist and educator at the New England Conservatory of Music, where she holds positions across the College, Prep, and Adult Education divisions. As Chair of Chamber Music at NEC Prep and previously Chair of Strings at NEC Adult Education, she has established herself as a dedicated mentor for cello and chamber music students of all ages. Her career spans prestigious performance venues worldwide including Carnegie Weill Hall, Jordan Hall, National Gallery of Art, and concert halls in Kiev and Taipei.
Ms. Ou's research and performance interests focus on bridging traditional European masterworks with contemporary and eclectic compositions. Her extensive collaborations with composers like Reza Vali, Hsiao Tyzen, Richard Toensing, and Daniel Pinkham have yielded numerous premieres and recordings. She excels in cross-cultural musical dialogues, regularly performing with instruments ranging from mandolin and banjo to erhu, pipa, and Persian santoor, creating innovative fusion works that expand classical music boundaries.
Her discography includes critically acclaimed recordings on Naxos, Albany, CRI, MSR, and Chi-Mei Records, featuring works by Sergei Taneyev, Reza Vali, and Walter Piston. Notable among these is the award-winning recording of Jeff Midkiff's 'Music for Mandolin & String Quartet,' which earned the 2018 Global Music Award. As a founding member of Trio Flamecrest and former member of the Carpe Diem String Quartet, she has established herself as a versatile chamber musician with deep expertise in both classical and contemporary repertoire.

As an educator, Ms. Ou has taught at NEC, MIT, and NYU, and served as the inaugural Director of Chamber Music at Heifetz International Music Institute. She travels internationally for master classes across five continents, sharing her expertise in cello technique and chamber music interpretation. Her educational philosophy emphasizes making chamber music both rigorous and enjoyable, fostering deep musical understanding alongside technical mastery in her students.
