Carol Magee is a Professor of Art History at the University of North Carolina, specializing in African contemporary art with a focus on photography and sound art. Her research explores intersections between visual culture, urban experiences, and embodied knowledge through practices like the Feldenkrais Method ®. She has published extensively, including her monograph *Africa in the American Imagination* (2011) and co-edited *African Art, Interviews, Narratives* (2013). Magee holds a PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and completed a Woodrow Wilson Postdoctoral Fellowship at Elon University.
Her current projects include *Urban Cadence: Street Scenes from Lagos and Johannesburg* (2019) and collaborations with North Carolina artists through the *Learning from Artists’ Archives* initiative. She serves on editorial boards for *African Arts* and *arts*, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue. Teaching interests span art historical methods, urban art, and photography history.
Magee’s work interrogates how visual and sonic mediums shape understandings of place, identity, and knowledge production. Her recent scholarship bridges African urbanism, global art networks, and postcolonial archiving, emphasizing collaborative practices and critical engagements with cultural memory.
