Carlos Monteiro is an Associate Professor of Sociology & Criminal Justice at Suffolk University, joining in 2017. Previously, he was a senior research associate at Northeastern University’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. His work focuses on corrections systems, reentry programs, and the social impacts of criminal convictions, with particular attention to deportation policies and correctional officer wellbeing. He holds a PhD from Northeastern University, an MA from the University of Connecticut, and a BS from Westfield State College.
Dr. Monteiro’s research explores correctional environments, including longitudinal studies on correctional officer mental health and suicide prevention. He co-leads projects like the NIJ-funded study on juvenile lifers’ psychological adjustment and collaborates with Boston-based organizations to address gun violence in marginalized communities. His work bridges criminal justice reform, public health, and sociocultural dynamics.
