Carlos F. Noreña is Professor and Richard and Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Chair in the Social Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. He serves as Director of the Graduate Group in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology, and directs the Berkeley Global Antiquity Project (BeGAP). His research spans Roman history, material and literary cultures, historical geography, and comparative empire studies.

Key research areas include Roman imperial governance, urban systems in ancient empires, coinage as political communication, and cross-civilizational analysis of the Han and Roman Empires. His work explores how empires maintained cohesion through representation, spatial organization, and cultural practices.
Recent publications focus on Atlantic frontiers, legislation in ancient Rome, and comparative urbanism. He co-edits the Cambridge University Press series Antiquity in Global Context and contributes to major reference works like The Oxford History of the Roman World.
