François Chausson

François Chausson is a Professor of the history of the Roman Empire at the University of Paris-1 Panthéon-Sorbonne since 2008. He is affiliated with the Sorbonne School of History (EHS) and ANHIMA: Anthropology and History of the Ancient Worlds (UMR 8210). Previously, he served as Lecturer in Roman history at the University of Paris-X Nanterre (1999-2008) and at the Practical School of Advanced Studies (2005-2008). He was Director of the Doctoral School of History at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne from September 2018 to February 2021, having previously served as Deputy Director from 2014-2018.

Chausson specializes in the political, social and cultural history of the Roman Empire from the 1st century BC to the 6th century AD, with particular expertise in imperial and senatorial prosopography, Latin and Greek epigraphy, topography of Rome, history of ancient Italy, provincial history across the Empire (Africa, Gaul, Spain, Achaia, Asia, Syria), and late antique historiography, particularly the edition of the Augustan History. His research demonstrates exceptional depth in Roman genealogical studies and imperial court dynamics.

His scholarly output reveals consistent focus on Roman imperial history, with recent publications examining imperial women, dynastic networks, provincial administration, and epigraphic evidence. Chausson has made significant contributions to understanding the Severan dynasty, Claudian period, and imperial ceremonies such as the Secular Games. His interdisciplinary approach bridges historical analysis with archaeological and epigraphic evidence.

Chausson has directed ten successfully defended theses and currently supervises four doctoral students.
