Peter Edwell is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University, serving as Deputy Director (Research) of the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies (ACANS) and a committee member of the Centre for Applied History. He holds a PhD in Ancient History (2006) and has authored three monographs, including The Case that Stopped a Nation, which was shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Literary Awards 2022. His research focuses on the Roman eastern provinces in Late Antiquity, Rome's interactions with the Sasanian Persian Empire, and Australian art history.
Edwell has led or contributed to multiple research projects, including studies on Roman-Mesopotamian relations, coinage in the Southern Levant, and imperial leadership dynamics. His work bridges ancient history with contemporary issues, such as analyzing ancient tariffs to inform modern economic policies. He has been featured in media outlets like The Conversation, The Independent, and BBC World Service, discussing historical parallels to current events.
