Barone holds a strong background in the sociology of education and social stratification. His research interests include education inequalities, educational policies, social class and mobility, metacognition, parental involvement, and behavioral decision-making in education. He investigates how socioeconomic status, gender, and information access shape educational trajectories and outcomes.
The recent publications of Carlo Barone reveal a consistent focus on experimental and comparative methodologies to evaluate educational policies and understand inequality mechanisms. His work spans early childhood interventions (e.g., shared reading), tracking effects, and intergenerational mobility, often using randomized controlled trials and large cross-national datasets. Key themes include the role of information in decision-making, the impact of parental behaviors, and the structural roots of educational disparities.
He is actively involved in research supervision and academic service:
- Thesis Supervision: Laudine Carbuccia, Camille Voisin, Mélanie Pinheiro
- Editorial Roles: Associate Editor of European Sociological Review; Regular reviewer for European Sociological Review, Sociology of Education, and Rassegna Italiana di Sociologia
Barone leads several major research projects including IDEE (Innovations, Data, and Experiments in Education), PIECE (Parenting and Inequalities in Early Child development), and PPP (Premiers Pas), all focused on evaluating early childhood and educational interventions. His work is deeply interdisciplinary, combining sociology, psychology, and public policy evaluation to address persistent social inequalities.
