Carla Marie Cuda, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine (Rheumatology) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She is also a Solovy/Arthritis Research Society Research Professor with affiliations to the Center for Human Immunobiology and NUCATS.
- Education: BS and PhD in Immunology from University of Florida, Postdoctoral training at University of Florida and Northwestern University
Dr. Cuda's research focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), particularly its neuropsychiatric manifestations (NP-SLE). Her work investigates roles of innate immune cells (macrophages, dendritic cells, microglia) and signaling factors like caspase-8 and Lipocalin-2 in disease progression using MRL/lpr mouse models and translational studies of cerebrospinal fluid populations.
Recent publications highlight her work on immunophenotyping in rheumatoid arthritis, macrophage heterogeneity in biliary atresia, and molecular signatures of NP-SLE. Awards include multiple Keystone Symposia Scholarships, AAI Travel Grants, and recognition for excellence in basic science research.
- Clinical Trials: Leading NP-SLE studies to identify gene-regulating factors and develop targeted treatments
- Leadership: Co-chair of American College of Rheumatology committee
- Editorial Roles: Associate Editor for Arthritis Research & Therapy and Frontiers in Lupus
