Carl-Ernst Rousseau is a Professor and Department Chair of Mechanical, Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. His research focuses on dynamic fracture mechanics, composite material behavior under extreme loading, and advanced optical testing methods. Rousseau collaborates extensively with institutions like the University of Connecticut and General Dynamics Electric Boat through the National Institute for Undersea Vehicle Technology (NIUVT).
- Education:
- Post-Doctoral Research in Aeronautics at California Institute of Technology
- Ph.D. from Auburn University
- M.S. and B.S. from University of Florida
His work spans shock loading, underwater explosions, and additive manufacturing, with expertise in functionally graded materials and nonhomogeneous material analysis. Recent publications include studies on 17-4PH stainless steel under dynamic loads and polymeric composites for blast mitigation.
Key research trends include dynamic buckling, spall strength, and smart composite structures. Rousseau leads and co-leads grants from the Office of Naval Research and RI Commerce Corporation for projects like underwater vehicle technology and additive manufacturing. His lab, the Dynamic and Photomechanics Laboratory (DPML), integrates optical methods and numerical simulations for material failure analysis.
